The studs history
dates from 1971 when Rae, in partnership with Audrey and Lyn Skinner,
bought a mare for breeding. In 1975, they sent this mare,Champayne ID11,
to the Perry familys young Appaloosa stallion, Nevada Sundancer.
Champayne went on to produce eight foals for the partnership, six by
Appaloosa stallions.

P&R Colida's Hopeful
Lad

At that time the stud
was called Sparkling Waters, situated as it was on the edge of Lake
Taupo. Champaynes first foal, SW Champayne Charlie, later became
New Zealands first national champion Appaloosa gelding. Another
of Champaynes progeny, SW Champaynes Perfection, obtained
a Register of Merit in performance.

Peter and Rae soon
formed their own stud, P&R Appaloosas, and in 1977 bought the first
Appaloosa mare born in New Zealand, Indian Hills Whispering Hope, who
gave them 11 foals. Her first-born was the colt P&R Colidas Hopeful
Lad (by Colidas Jet Set), one of the three stallions still part of P&R
Appaloosas today.
