P&R Colida’s Hopeful Lad

The American Trophy

The American ApHC International award is awarded at the Council’s discretion for meritorious services and/or outstanding contribution and/or achievement. This award cannot be bought or won; it has to be earned. It is the highest accolade the Association can give or bestow on any member or Horse.

And it was with great pleasure we received the American Trophy in 2004 and also in 2012.

We give thanks to many people who have encouraged and helped us over the years, starting with Hilton and Margaret Perry, who answered our many questions when we first started and gave us the opportunity to purchase from their Indian Hills Stud the first Appaloosa mare born in New Zealand, called Indian Hills Whispering Hope. She was already in foal to Colida’s Jetset when we got her, and we based our stud on that great mare and the wonderful foals that we bred from her.

P&R Colida’s Hopeful Lad 315 was her very first foal and became the winner of the very first Futurity held in New Zealand in 1980. He was also High Point Equal 2 and 3-year-old stallion that year. Peter rode him a lot and even took him to the Hunts. At 26 years of age, he is still a wonderful animal with a great nature and is still being used at stud.

Her second foal was P&R Whispering Lad 410 and he was the very first New Zealand-bred Appaloosa to take out Supreme National Champion in 1984. He was bought for Awanui Appaloosa Stud as a weanling colt by Henry Williams and Carol Outen, who had a lot of good times and great foals from him. We were helped as well by Albert and Fay Tucker, who had imported from America the great stallion Dusti Breeze. After IH Whispering Hope had had four foals we took her to visit Dusti Breeze, who at that time was owned by Albert and Fay. The combination of the two horses bred some wonderful progeny so that when the chance to buy Dusti Breeze came up we bought him and then added some more mares to our stud to complement both Dusti Breeze and P&R Colidas Hopeful Lad. In total, IH Whispering Hope had 11 foals and most of them are still with their original owners. We even have a weanling colt at the stud from P&R Colida’s Hopeful Lad this year, so the old girl’s line still goes on.

The mares we bought or borrowed included Deck’s Streaker, Joker’s Jem, Siri’s Priceless Touch, Kotuku Tickle Pink, Claremont’s Mancha, Prince’s Misty Twist, Reflection Snowprint, AGR’s Ziggy Stardust, Rain Angel, and IH Plain Jane. Over the years we have bred some great horses and met some wonderful people like Gordon and Marilyn Taylor, Grant and Wendy Mackie, Robert and Maria Thompson, Shelia Dandy, Ron and Carole Davies, Megan Colquhoun, Hori and Audi Haymen, Richard and Debbie Pittam, Lorna Macdonald and Sandi Cooper, plus many others who we count as true life-long friends, right through New Zealand and overseas. We have worked with these wonderful horses and people for nearly 30 years, and we still have a deep love for the Appaloosa horse.
The American Trophy has pride of place in our home for the next 12 months. Thank you all.
